The dreams and inspiring possibilities at Give Kids the World are endless. Special connections to the Village always remain for those who have been involved with the Village in a unique way. Whether it’s acting as a volunteer Angel, or watching your family have the time of their lives on a wish trip – the Village experience is always a special gift.
Steve participated in a special service project at GKTW in April of 2008. While at the Village, the volunteer team helped build a home for Horton the Elephant. The crane lifted Horton the Elephant and placed him by the Garden of Hope and Julie’s Safari Theatre – a delightful spot, where Horton sits to this day. Steve’s volunteer experience enlightened him and opened his eyes to the service initiatives that corporate involvement can provide within their communities.
Steve found special meaning in his GKTW volunteer experience and viewed selfless service with compassion, when his little girl, Cara, was granted her own wish trip. Steve found himself at the Village once again, not as a volunteer, but as a supportive wish father with his family. The Village experience became more personal for the family as they enjoyed every fun-filled moment at GKTW and visited Horton, who was still right where Steve had left him.
“I can’t express the importance of humanitarian events or giving back to the community, especially after our daughter became ill,” says Steve, as he shares his special connection to the Village. “You never know who may benefit from your work.”
Cara’s visit to the Village was life changing. She was able to see the beauty of the Village and never stopped smiling during her wish trip. Some of her favorite Village memories included at least 10 daily rides on the Enchanted Carousel and swimming in the pool, regardless of the chilly weather. “It was the trip of a lifetime. GKTW was amazing and we loved it,” says Cara’s mother, Diane.
The Village experience is a charmed snapshot in time, filled with dreamlike memories for our wish families. GKTW is so grateful for Steve’s volunteerism and was honored to be a part of Cara’s wish trip.
