in The Donor Experience, The Volunteer Experience

Thanks to a group of special visitors from Windy Ridge K-8 School, many of our visiting wish children made new, cuddly friends.  As part of the “Hugs Across America” initiative, seven classes of dedicated students collected donations throughout the school year to provide adorable bears to children at the Village.

As the sun set on the Village, several students gathered with their teachers in front of the Gingerbread House.  The students could not wait for the wish children to arrive for dinner.  As they waited for the families to return from the parks, one student exclaimed, “I am going to give away the first bear and make someone very happy!  I will even let them pick a color.”

Sure enough, his prediction came true!  As the families arrived for dinner, he surprised the first wish child with a pink teddy bear.  Her eyes instantly lit up as she squeezed her new friend.  Other students ran up and down the Avenue, eager to find a child who had not yet received a bear.

By the end of the night, more than 200 bears had been handed out to GKTW families.  The Windy Ridge students tossed their empty boxes in the air to celebrate the success.

It is always heartwarming to see youth involved at the Village.  We are so thankful for the hard work of Windy Ridge K-8 School’s students!  The memories you created that night will be with our families forever.
