Thankful Thursday

in The Family Experience

We often hear from families telling us how much they enjoyed their stay at Give Kids The World.

This Thank You comes from Wish Mom, Launi.

Tuesday I was sitting in the oncologist’s office again. I have forgotten how many times we have done this now, but it’s been a lot. Eli, 8, is now 23 months off of treatment for leukemia. He was playing FIFA Soccer on the iPad as we waited.

Absolutely out of the blue and without looking up at me, he said, “I’m glad I got cancer.” I thought this definitely required a follow-up question. “Why do you say that?” I asked. “Because I got that really cool trip to Disneyworld and Give Kids the World- where I ate ice cream everyday.”

Our visit was 4 years ago this month. I just wanted to say thank you. As Eli is getting older, it is clear that the negative memories are fading and he’s left with the memories of what you have given him. Thank you for giving him good, happy memories to drown out the bad ones. What you set out to do for our son, made a lasting impact on our family. Thank you.

Eli today, four years after his visit to Give Kids The World.

Thank you, Eli and Launi, for sharing your story and your wish!
