How You Can Balance Work, Life and Volunteering

We know that making time to volunteer isn’t always easy. And for our college crowd, squeezing in volunteering may even seem impossible.

“Juggling work, life, school, and volunteering? There’s no way.”

But, there is a way! Take it from someone who has mastered the balancing act of full-time employee, full-time student, and faithful Village volunteer: Bre Bechtel.

On top of the 2,500+ hours Bre has volunteered at the Village, she works full-time and attends the University of Central Florida. Bre is pursuing her bachelor of science in psychology and has been a GKTW volunteer since 2013, when she came with her high-school program.

“At first I came to the Village just to get my 25 hours of community service done,” says Bre. “But then I fell in love and never left.”

Bre’s love for the Village is obvious. So, how exactly how does she manage it all? Here are her tips for making volunteering part of your life:

Find a Shift that Fits Your Schedule

Bre says the Village’s flexibility helps her create a balanced schedule.

“Give Kids The World doesn’t require you to volunteer a certain number of hours per week, month or year. So, if you have a packed schedule, maybe volunteer one Saturday a month. If you have a more lenient schedule, you can volunteer one day a week.”

Plus, volunteer shifts vary in length. Our Volunteer Services team can help you choose a shift that suits your availability. Once you find a volunteer schedule that fits, you can stick with it to create magical memories for children battling critical illnesses.

Make Connections

Not only can you benefit from interacting with wonderful children and families, volunteering can help students make important connections and boost their resumes.

“I’ve met so many different people at the Village, including good friends, my boyfriend, and even a past employer,” says Bre. “Plus, having volunteer work on your resume definitely looks good for scholarships and jobs.”

Create Happiness and Hope

As a volunteer at Give Kids The World, you play a part in creating laughter, joy and fun for families who need it most. During a time when their schedules are filled with treatments, surgeries and hospital visits, you can help give them a worry-free vacation.

Although it may seem like a lot to juggle, it’s not only possible to manage – it’s worth it.
